Hyde Park was established in the 1890s, making it the oldest suburb in Austin, Texas. Today it still includes many buildings that date to the turn of the 20th Century, along with more modern developments and a number of large parks.
The first homes in Hyde Park were mansions, designed to appeal to the Victorian upper crust. However, these were soon followed by more modest bungalows, to meet growing demand from Austin's working-class families. Today historic homes in both categories are centered in two districts – the Hyde Park Historic District and the Shadow Lawn Historic District.
In recent decades, demand for Hyde Park homes for rent has continued to grow, and a number of apartment complexes have been constructed in the area. These developments have been balanced with a focus on maintaining green, open spaces and preserving Hyde Park's historic value.
The neighborhood's largest park, Shipe Park, is named after the suburb's original developer, Morton Martin Shipe. The park features plenty of shady spots with tables for picnics, as well as a playground, basketball and tennis courts, and a popular swimming pool. It's also home to the nine-hold Hancock Golf Course, which is the oldest golf course in Texas.
