East Austin falls under the Austin Independent School District (AISD), which serves about 130 schools.
The AISD largely succeeds in its aims, which include providing high-quality education to students and inspiring them to make a positive contribution to society.
The district employs 261 National Board Certified teachers – more than any other school district in Texas – and has partnered with world-class universities, innovative businesses, and non-profit organizations to help prepare students for college.
East Austin leading schools
East Austin includes a large number of excellent public and private schools. Here we consider just a small selection of leading schools in the area.
Blackshear is the first elementary school in Austin to offer an expanded fine arts program. The arts programs include dance, music, visual arts and theatre production.
Shortly after its transformation into an arts academy, Blackshear was named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This accolade is based on overall academic achievement or progress in closing achievement gaps between students.
Blackshear was one of 28 schools to be recognized in Texas. The school has an 94% passing rate across all subjects, and has been acknowledged by the Texas Education Agency for achievements in reading and science.
Zavala Elementary offers art, music, physical education and science to students, as well as a preschool program for children with disabilities. Zavala Elementary has been acknowledged by the Texas Education Agency for its achievements in reading and science, as well as for closing the performance gaps between students. Zavala had a passing rate of 79% across all subjects in 2015.
Kealing Middle School has a reputation for excellence in academics, offering a challenging and advanced core curriculum.
In 2015, the school achieved a passing rate of 89% across all subjects, and was recognized by the Texas Education Agency for achievement in reading, math, science and social studies. Sports offered at Kealing Middle School include volleyball, soccer, basketball, football, track, and tennis.
Gonzalo Garza Independence High School offers a non-traditional, self-paced learning approach. In 2015 the school achieved a passing rate of 81% across all subjects. The school has a strong chess team – currently ranked among the top ten teams in Texas.
